CHS has recorded a significant increase in calls to its 24/7 Helpline in the first half of 2025, with a 20% rise compared to the same period last year. Between January and June, the Helpline received 4,739 calls, up from 3,963 in the first six months of 2024. Of these, 2,521 were completed conversations with trained volunteers, reflecting an 18% increase in meaningful engagement.

Calls relating to suicidal thoughts also rose, from 151 to 183 – a 21% increase – underscoring the vital role CHS continues to play in supporting those in crisis.

The surge in activity follows a robust and far-reaching publicity campaign launched by CHS last year. This included eye-catching adverts across Brussels metro stations, the creation of a new Instagram presence, and increased activity on other social media channels. Most notably, CHS partnered with the suicide prevention movement Darkness into Light, culminating in a sunrise walk on May 10 attended by hundreds of supporters. The event not only raised awareness but also generated enough in donations to fund the Helpline’s operations for a full year.

To support this growth and maintain high-quality care, CHS is now recruiting two qualified mental health professionals to supervise and guide the volunteers who respond to calls around the clock. More information about the roles can be found here.

CHS is also calling on empathetic individuals who are good listeners to consider volunteering with the service. Full training is provided, and volunteers become part of a supportive community committed to helping others in distress. If you think you could make a difference, express your interest here.

The growing number of people turning to CHS for help shows the impact of greater visibility, but also the continuing need for compassionate, confidential support at any hour of the day or night.

The number to call for the Helpline is +32 2 648 4014.
